It would be hard to imagine a more misleading title than “Fiercely Modern: Art of the Naga Warrior,” the name of a show at the Rubin Museum of Art. The Naga, a diverse collection of peoples speaking similar languages and residing in a mountainous area in northeastern India, certainly were fierce. Headhunting was one of their prized pursuits. But they were far from modern by present-day standards. In fact, the culture of the Naga was nearly destroyed by modern Europeans. For a modern viewer it is hard to fathom that something so lovely should be designed to celebrate such an abhorrent practice. The grisly style of a “Head Trophy” on display seems more appropriate. It consists of a series of woven rattan spheres hanging in a line ending at the bottom with a pair of human skulls, one of which has bull’s horns attached to each side. The horns, notes the museum label, were supposed to make the victim “deaf to the calls of his own community asking for the name of the man who had killed him.”



While this head trophy has a bracing and disturbing ugliness, what is more shocking is that headhunting was so thoroughly woven into the fabric of Naga culture at every level. Successful headhunters were like star athletes, admired by all and especially attractive to women. “A young man who had yet to bag a head would be teased by the girls in his clan, and simply ignored by those in other clans,where cards are embedded with chip card and a cardholder.” notes the introduction to “Naga Identities: Changing Local Cultures in the Northeast of India,” a book of scholarly essays sold in the museum bookstore and a must for anyone who wants to know more about the Naga.

Matthew Krizan’s Mahone Bay restaurant, Mateus Bistro, will mark its third anniversary next month, no small feat in this very difficult business.



And since Krizan won the black box competition at this spring’s Saltscapes expo, Mateus has been doing more than surviving, it’s been thriving. So it was no surprise to find a patio full of diners on a sunny Sunday afternoon.



“Winning that contest — it definitely opened the Halifax door for me and got my name out in Halifax, for sure,” Krizan told me on the phone the night after three of us had lunch there.



When it’s hot out, the patio or the downstairs dining room is the best bet here as the main floor space, off the open kitchen, is almost as warm as the kitchen itself. We sat downstairs in what would once have been the basement of this 160-year-old building, but it’s much brighter than you’d expect, thanks to a screen door leading to the yard.



Vibrant art work on the walls adds even more cheer, as did the personality of our server, Kira. The wine list also made me happy, with a nice mix of old and new world wines and offerings from Petite Riviere, Grand Pre and Luckett. As we walked from the car to the restaurant, I told BJ I hoped the soup of the day would be gazpacho, which seemed appropriate to the weather. Dressing for the caesar salad is made in-house and is on the creamy end of the spectrum, but no dressing could rescue the romaine, which was yellow and obviously the dregs of a head. It would have been better to say the caesar was n/a than to serve that lettuce. Bunny Yeager was a photographer at a time when men dominated that profession, but the model turned pin-up photographer used that to her advantage when photographing women in the 1950s and `60s.



She was able to make everyday women, from stay-at-home mothers to airline attendants, feel comfortable enough to bare it all. In the mid-1950s, she helped jump-start the career of then-unknown Bettie Page with her photo in Playboy. More than five decades after shooting the well-known stills of Page in a leopard-print bathing suit standing next to a real cheetah, 40 framed prints of her work are on display in a gallery in Wynwood, Miami's arts district.



"They all wanted to model for me because they knew that I wouldn't take advantage of them," Yeager, now 83, said of her models. "And I wouldn't push them to do nude if they didn't want to do nudes. It wasn't a day when nude photography was prevalent."



Wes Carson, a photography instructor at the Miami International University of Art & Design, said the way women were "surveyed" in Yeager's photographs was distinct from her male counterparts.



"When I look at her work, the women have a different demeanor," he said. "They are more confident. They are in charge of their sexuality, where if you look at someone else's work the women are much more dismissive and demure."



Last year, Yeager, a Pennsylvania native, published the coffee table book "Bunny Yeager's Darkroom" and is working on another book that will include her photos of Page. But in 2010, the Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh held an exhibition of her work. Now, there is the Miami exhibition.

During more than 18 years of unearthing, the Siebenbergs discovered a ritual bath, known as a mikveh used by Jews during the Second Temple era, an aqueduct, a Byzantine water cistern, and even empty burial chambers believed to have been used by Jewish royalty in the 10th century B.C. during King Solomon’s reign.



Eventually, the remnants of the base wall of what is believed to be a Jewish home that stood 2,000 years ago, were also uncovered as were ancient Hasmonean stones, including one with a menorah engraving. Evidence of the Roman destruction of the Second Temple in 70 C.E. was also discovered –a line of ash sealed into sedimentary rock was sent to a special lab in South Africa for testing, which found that the ashes were indeed from that time. In the 1980s, the story behind the Siebenberg’s basement, which Theo had transformed into a museum for the public in 1985, received much international attention. Deputy County Counsel Ed Kiernan has noted a list of banned gang insignia will be posted on the fair website and available at the gate. On the BSE, shares of Gitanjali Gems fell 19.99 per cent to close at Rs 405.35, while the PC Jeweller stock touched its 52-week low of Rs 84.55 in intraday trading but recovered later to close at Rs 89.35, down 8.55 per cent from its previous close.



Mumbai-based Tribhovandas Bhimji Zaveri (TBZ) saw a fall of 6.88 per cent in its shares and closed at Rs 181.95 on the BSE. Titan stock declined 0.47 per cent to Rs 221.80 on Monday. However, it had fallen sharply since June 3 when it closed at Rs 289.6.

Analysts attributed the fall to concerns on topline growth in view of the forecast that volume growth in the second quarter would be down by almost half.



Another analyst, AVP at Religare Securities, Vikas Inder Jain said that the working capital requirements will be impacted for some of these companies.



“It will increase, pushing the debt equity ratio higher from the current levels by 0.5-0.8 per cent. This in turn will dent the return on equity and capital employed, and there valuations.”



Some of these companies, which had announced expansion plans before the plunge in gold prices and subsequent RBI curbs caught them offguard, could be in a tight spot, said Sekhar. “They have made investments into it and would find it extremely difficult to reverse, in view of the recent developments.”



PC Jeweller said that expansion plans are indeed on course. The president-finance of the New Delhi-based company, Sanjeev Bhatia said, “There is no change in our plans and we are going to open 14 stores this fiscal.” It opened six stores in the first quarter. "As a responsible trade body, we have requested our retailers not to sell gold coins or bars. We need to help the government to solve the CAD (current account deficit) problem," said Haresh Soni, chairman of the AIGJTF, which has more than 40,000 members.



India is the world's biggest gold buyer, and soaring imports have sent its current account to a record deficit. New Delhi has raised the import duty on gold twice since January 1, doubling it to 8 percent, and the central bank has imposed measures forcing customers to pay up front for gold.

The government's and central bank's latest actions to curb buying came earlier this month, and Soni said imports in June had declined drastically. He declined to give specific figures.



Finance Minister P. Chidambaram said last week imports had fallen in value to about $36 million a day from $135 million before the curbs.



But the World Gold Council (WGC) estimated imports could still be 300-400 tonnes in the second quarter - almost half the total for 2012 - and the government itself said imports had exceeded 300 tonnes in April to mid-May.



Domestic prices are already back near levels before the rise in the duty, which indicates demand could revive, particularly as a bountiful monsoon starts to raise hopes of increased incomes for farmers and India's large rural community.



On April 16, domestic gold futures hit a contract low of 25,270 rupees per 10 grams, and they are now trading around 26,734 rupees.



"Demand in India is price inelastic ... the fundamental reasons for gold demand in India cannot be addressed through supply restrictions," said Somasundaram PR, managing director for India at the WGC, in an email.



The WGC last month said 82 percent of Indian consumers in a survey said they thought the price of gold would increase or be stable in the next five years. Many Indians see gold as a sound investment in a country that lacks any kind of comprehensive banking system and with real interest rates stubbornly low.

This year, the Kedarnath shrine opened on May 14 and Badrinath on May 16. The shrine usually remains open till November, but the number of devotees decreases in the monsoon.



Collections run into crores each year and nearly Rs 9-Rs 10 crore is declared each year. Apart from cash, devotees offer gold as well. As this was the peak season owing to summer vacations, donations to the shrine were bound to be high. The cast iron collection boxes are usually emptied under tight security and the contents deposited in the bank. Divisional Commissioner, Garhwal Division, Subhardhan said, “Thieves have been making attempts. The local district magistrate is a member of the temple committee, but he does not enjoy administrative control over it.”



As estimated, 10,000 pilgrims were at Kedarnath when catastrophe struck. Lakshman Singh, an ITBP assistant sub-inspector and eyewitness, said, “There were 10,000-12,000 persons at the shrine when the catastrophe struck on June 16. With the administration is yet to arrive at a death toll, it is anybody’s guess what thieves have fled with in terms of gold jewellery.”

“If I have to sacrifice those things then I will. I sold everything I owned, from my motorbike, sofa, clothes and shoes. I even sold creams and oils I haven’t used.



“I have sold whatever there is you can sell, you wouldn’t believe it. I had friends messaging me asking if I was selling my whole life.



“I’m over the moon to have finally done it, but I’ve been left in a bit of an empty shell now. I’ve got a mattress on the floor and my daughter’s got her bed and that’s about it.”



Fran decided to sell her possessions in January this year after she worked out she could halve her monthly outgoings if she bought a house.

The enterprising mum used free internet sites such as Facebook and Gumtree, as well as car boot sales, to advertise her stuff.



She sold many of her items to complete strangers and managed to negotiate prices with fellow tenants for white goods like her fridge-freezer and dishwasher.



Fran also parted with many of her prized possessions, including precious jewellery and ornaments, and sold most of her vast collection of shoes.



She sold each of her 30 pairs for ￡10, and raised ￡300 towards her total.



Fran, a software engineer, even retrained as a beautician so she could work evenings and weekends.



She said: “The way I see it is I pay ￡900 a month on rent with bills on top and if I move into a house my mortgage would be half of that.

“I sold my clothes, stuff I don’t wear anymore. For years I haven’t changed size so I sold what I didn’t wear. I got quite a lot for them and I’m still selling some.



“Same with my shoes. I was just hoarding stuff I didn’t really need.



“The only downside is that I didn’t get half as much as what they were worth but you just want to make sure you can get what you can.”



Fran recently queued up with her mum for 20 hours at Silcox Son and Wicks, in Bath, during a recent sale, to buy some new furniture.

Fran added: “I have managed to still save money, I sold my sofa for ￡700 and bought another one for ￡500, I’ve got ￡200 in my pocket still.



“I have sold everything, but I’ve worked it all out, I know what will fit where and what I needed to get rid of.”
